A CLIMB TO THE TOP

Let's climb to that highest peak in the horizon, ok boys? (pic 1.) This will be an easy hike. We'll just follow those two Norwegian guys who run there in front of us. They seem to know the way up. ... They run too fast for us,  we can't keep up with them. Did they just go over that ridge? Where are they now? Take a look with the binoculars, they must be somewhere on that mountain wall, but too far to see with plain eyes. It's such a steep mountain wall... Hey, there they are! Where? There, high up, those two moving spots! Oh, let them go, we can manage up by ourselves now ... hey, take a look on this side! Here's a great view over that lake. It must be some two hundered meters below us and it looks just like an impact  crater (pic 2)

Puff, puff, pant, PUFF!!! I begin to wonder if those Norwegian guys went this way after all!? Another hundered meters up and we'll be on that ridge. We can rest there for a while.... PUFFF, PUFFF!!! Oh my, what a view! Those mountains must be already on Swedish ground. Hey, there's a hut by the lake down there! (pic 3) OK, let's get going! Now we have a real nasty wall to climb. I wonder if the Norvegian guys used that rocky path up. It looks as if a  lot of water has come down from there in the spring. Right, we're off! ... This mountain wall is so steep that it makes one dizzy to look down. Hey, look out! These rocks start to roll under my feet! ... My, that was close. A lucky thing you two managed to jump to the side. Are you all right? We should have known that there's nothing to keep these boulders from rolling on this smooth bedrock once they get going. We were lucky that they sopped at all. It was a foolish thing to choose such a path up. Now we'll continue with caution and step only on rocks that sit firmly in soil. Luckily we're almost at the top.

Oh boy, what a scenery! Hey, there is a glacier and a glacier lake here! (pic 4) And the wind is blowing like in a hurricane - and its cold! I can hardly stand upright. Let's find some shelter and have some food - I'm hungry, and exhausted! Besides, isn't this just about enough climbing for one day? We've been on the trail for at least three hours, if not four. - No, we want to climb to that peak! We want to go to that high peak!!! -   No, let's go down boys. - NO, WE WANT UP! Have you got more of those sandwiches dad? Why don't you have any more chocolate? ... Mmmm, was that good or what? ...What ... can that be true? Are those guys now on that snow up there? Where? There, on that even field of snow, to the left of the peak! Yes they are. Two dark moving spots on white snow. How on earth have they managed to get there in such a short time? Have they had a helicopter? They must have passed this lake from the left and then up that cliff where there is no snow untill they have reached the edge of the glacier. Some mountain climbers they are! Hey, let's take a picture of them with a telephoto lens, maybe they appear on the film! (pic 5)

By the way, I can see our cars from here, or at least the dirt road where we parked our cars. (pic 6) - Are they THAT far? You mean we have to WALK back all the way THERE?!?   Stop complaining boys, we are going back now. We'll look for another path that   these Norwegian boys might have used. ... Hey, here is a nice path down, and its not as steep as the one we came up!

... Ouch, ouch ... going down is harder on my old knees than going up! I really need to rest a while. Luckily its only some few hundered meters to the cars. Hey, are those the Norwegian guys? Where? Well there right behind us and they are just about to catch us up! Gee, they ARE catching us up! We didn't even manage to get to the cars before them, even though they went further and higher up! What a shame! Hey, let's ask them if they REALLY went to the top! - Hello! Did you climb all the way to the top? - Yes, it was a wonderful view from up there. - Oh, ... hey, we saw you as you were going over the snow! We took some photographs of you! - OK, that's nice, ... see you guys by the cars!
- Yeah,... by! ... Well, there they go.

Puff, puff, what a hike! Now let's get some dry clothes on! (pic 7) Hey, have those Norwegian boys managed some hot coffee already? Now look, the other one is walking this way! ... What did he want? - Well, he asked if those pictures turn out right that we would send him copies to Troms. He could then tell his buddies that he had climbed that 1500 meter peak for the first time. Our pictures would be proof   thereof. He even gave his address. - Oh, well of course we can send him the pictures! These guys really did some climbing!

ERÄS NOUSU TUNTURILLE

Helppo reissu, seurataan vaan noita norjalaisia kavereita, jotka juoksee tuossa edessä. Ne näyttää tietävän mistä pääsee ylös. Kiivetään tuolle kaikkein korkeimmalle terävälle huipulle! (kuva 1) Menevät muuten sellaista vauhtia, että ei pysytä millään perässä. Menikö ne tuosta satulasta yli? Missä ne nyt on? Katohan kiikarilla, ei me muuten päästä tuosta seinästä ylös. On niin jyrkkä rinne.... Tuolla ne menee! Missä? No tuolla ylhäällä, nuo kaksi liikkuvaa pistettä! Annetaan niiden mennä kyllä me nyt osataan itsekin.... Hei, katsos tälle puolelle! Täältä on mahtavat näkymät tuolle järvelle. Se on varmaan
parisataa metriä meidän alapuolella. Ihan kuin joku kuun kraateri. (kuva 2)

...Puuh, puuh, lääh, ja puuuh!!! Meniköhän ne sittenkään tästä? Ei olis kun enää satakunta metriä ylöspäin niin sitten oltaisiin tuolla tasanteella. Siellä pidetään tauko. On täältä mahtavat näkymät! Taitaa olla nuo jo Ruotsin puolen tuntureita. Hei tuolla järven rannassa näyttää olevan kämppä! (kuva 3) Eiköhän jatketa nousua. Nyt onkin jyrkkä seinä. Oliskohan ne Norjan pojat nousseet tuota kivikkoista vanaa pitkin. Siitä on varmaan keväällä tullut kovasti sulamisvesiä alas. Mennään! ... Huh huh! meinaa ihan huimata, on niin jyrkkä seinämä. Hei varokaa! Nämä kivet lähtee jalkojen alla vierimään! ... Olipa se täpärällä, hyvä, että ehditte hypätä sivuun. Ootteks te kunnossa? Olisi pitänyt arvata, että tällaista sileässä kalliokurussa istuvaa murikkakasaa ei mikään pidättele kun se lähtee jalkojen alta liikkeelle. Hyvä, että pysähtyi alkuunsa. Toista kertaa ei kaverit tehdä tällaista tyhmyyttä! Nyt mennään varovasti ja astutaan vaan sellaisille kiville, jotka istuu mullassa kiinni. Onneksi rupeaa jo rinnekin loppumaan ollaan kohta seuraavalla huipulla.

Voi pojat mitkä näkymät! Hei, täällä on jäätikkö ja jäätikköjärvi! (kuva 4) Ja tuulee niin vietävästi - ja kylmästi. Eihän täällä meinaa pysyä pystyssä! Haetaan tuulensuoja ja syödään eväät. Minä olen ainakin ihan puhki! Eikös tämä jo riittäisikin nousuksi tälle päivälle? Ollaan jo oltu varmaan kolme tuntia matkassa, ellei neljä. Ei kun noustaan tuolle korkealle terävälle huipulle, me halutaan tolle korkealle huipulle! Ei kun mennään jo alas. Ei kun YLÖS! Onks sulla vielä niitä voileipiä? Miks sull' ei oo enempää suklaata? ... Mmm kylläpä maistui eväät! Voiks toi muuten olla totta? Onks
ne kaverit nyt tuolla lumilla? Missä? No tuolla, tuon terävän huipun vasemmalla puolella olevalla valkoisella yhtenäisellä lumikentällä! On ne! Siinä ne nousee vierekkäin. Kaksi mustaa liikkuvaa pistettä valkoisella hangella. Miten ihmeessä ne on ehtiny tuonne saakka? Onks niillä ollu helikopteri? Ne on varmasti menneet tuon järven vasenta laitaa ja sitten tuosta lumetonta aluetta ylös kunnes ovat päässeet lumikentän kohdalle. Aika poikia kiipeämään! Otetaan yksi kuva teleellä, jos vaikka näkyisivät pojat kuvassa. (kuva 5).

Täältä näkyy muuten meidän autotkin, tai ainakin se hiekkatie, jonka varteen ne parkkeerattiin (kuva 6). Onks ne NOIN kaukana? Pitääks meidän KÄVELLÄ tonne saakka takaisin?!? Nyt ei pojat valitella, me lähtetään alaspäin! Etsitään täältä kauempaa se norjalaiskavereiden käyttämä nousukohta. Eiköhän siitä käy alasmenokin helpommin. ... Hei täällä olis ollut ihan kunnon polku, eikä edes niin jyrkkä kun se meidän käyttämä puronuoma!

.....Voi jessus kun tämä alasmeno ottaa vanhoille polville paljon pahemmin kuin se nousu. Nyt on kyllä levättävä hieman.
Onneksi ei ole autoille enää kuin muutama sataa metriä. Hei, onks noi ne samat norjalaiskaverit? Ai missä? No noi jotka tulee meidän takana ja jotka painelee kohta meidän ohi. ... Voi juku ne MENEE ohi! Me ei ehditty edes autoille takasin ennen niitä vaikka ne kävi paljon pidemmällä ja korkeammalla! Hävettää! Kysytään niiltä kävikö ne TODELLA huipulla asti. - Hello! Did you climb all the way to the top? - Yes, it was a wonderful view from up there. - Oh, ... hey, we saw you as you were going over the snow! We took some photographs of you! - OK, that's nice, ... see you guys by the cars!
- Yeah,... by! Sinne ne nyt meni.

Huh huh, olipa reissu! Nyt täytyy saada kuivaa vaatetta ylle (kuva 7). Hei onko nuo norjalaispojat jo ehtineet keitellä kahvitkin? Kato nyt se toinen tulee tänne! ... Mitä sillä oli asiaa? No, se kysy, että jos ne kuvat onnistuu niin
voitaisiinko me lähettää sille Tromssaan yhdet kopiot. Se voisi kehuskella kavereille, että oli ensimmäistä kertaa käymässä tuolla yli 1500 metrisellä huipulla. Kuvat olisivat todisteena. Se antoi osoitteensakin. Ai jaa, no lähetetään ilman muuta. Oli ne sen verran kovia kavereita kiipeämään.
